SCRIPTURE: “Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.” (Isaiah 55:3 NIV)
QUOTE: “God is never tired of forgiving us; we are the ones who is tired of seeking his mercy.” -Pope Francis
NOTE:
I want to examine an aspect of the love of God which is reflected in His mercy and capacity to grant pardon. God is infinitely merciful which means that His mercies endure forever. All through the Old Testament, God demonstrated His love to Israel in such a way and manner that even in their recalcitrance, the mercy of God covered them and provided for their needs.
They ate manna for 49yrs, their shoes did not file, their clothes did not fade, they were partakers of the covenant, the pillar of fire and of cloud, to lead them by day and by night. What a show of mercy!
The writer of Hebrews gave a profound expression to this reality. Hebrews 4:16, we have throne of grace and in this throne of grace, we are to obtain mercy [the sure mercies] and find grace to help in times of need. Don’t allow any preacher to keep you in condemnation consciousness, rather be conscious of the sure mercies, the kind of mercies that David enjoyed which is now your right in Christ
ILLUSTRATION:
God made a covenant with David to establish his throne, house and his kingdom for forever [2Sam 7:14]. Beyond this, God promised to extend to David the sure mercies. This means that God was eternally committed to show mercy to David forever. This was clearly seen when God preserved the throne of David forever and made Christ to come through the lineage of David and Christ was made to sit on the throne of David.
REFLECTION:
- How conscious are you of this nondiscriminatory love?
