WHAT LEADERS MUST DO: GROW PEOPLE

SCRIPTURE: “And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you…” (2 Corinthians 12:15a KJV)

QUOTE: “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” -Jack Welch

NOTE:

Great leadership is characterized by the desire and ability to grow the people around you. A great leader shifts his/her focus from delivering great results to developing others who can deliver great results. This is the only way that success is scalable and sustainable. A Leader’s value will be reflected by the competence of those he/she leads. When a leader is focused on helping everyone around him/her to succeed, that is all the evidence needed to prove that he/she is a successful leader. American Activist Ralph Nader said, “I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” As we develop those around us to be successful leaders, then they can teach those around them to do the same. The idea of competition and the need to keep someone down so you can get ahead is false. To truly get ahead, you have to bring others with you.

ILLUSTRATION:

Nothing illustrates or depicts the necessity for leaders to grow people like the Chinese Proverb that says: “If you want one year of prosperity, grow grain.

If you want ten years of prosperity, grow trees.

If you want one hundred years of prosperity, grow people”

For organizations to survive, a continuous series of top talents under development is required to develop future leadership for the organization

REFLECTION:

As a leader in your sphere, do you have a group of people you’re growing or developing? Are you deliberate about growing future Leaders?
