OVERCOMING TEMPPTATION: GET INTO GOD’S WORD

SCRIPTURE: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8 KJV)

QUOTE: “God has spoken to man, and the Bible is His Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation…. Godliness means responding to God’s revelation in truth and obedience, faith and worship, prayer and praise, submission and service. Life must be seen and lived in the light of God’s Word. This, and nothing else, is true religion.” -J. I Packer

NOTE:

To love God is to obey God. Obedience to God’s commands leads to righteousness. “With our hearts, we obey the teaching of the truth which has the power to deliver us from death to eternal life.” “To revere the righteous God is to obey his commands.

The temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it.” It is not a sin to be tempted.

The Bible says Jesus was tempted just like we are, but He never sinned. God will never get angry with you when you are tempted. He wants and delights to show you a way out of every temptation. The big question is, will you be wise enough to obey His voice and follow His lead? When Jesus was tempted, His only defense was the Word of God.

He said, “It is written… It is written… It is written…” You cannot say, “It is written,” if you don’t know what is written. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” How much of the Word you have inside will determine how much of the world you will over outside!

ILLUSTRATION:

Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.

REFLECTION:

  1. How does the word help against temptations?
  2. How can we apply the word when facing temptation?
