LEADERSHIP PITFALLS: DISLIKE FOR EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK

SCRIPTURE: “When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? [14] And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. [15] He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?” (Matthew 16:13-15 KJV).

QUOTE: “Feedback is a gift. Ideas are the currency of our next success. Let people see you value both feedback and ideas.” –Jim Trinka and Les Wallace

NOTE:

Feedback is a critical factor in determining the success of any project, assignment or task. It is effective when it is detailed and with specifics. Effective feedback requires that the leader must take deliberate steps to ensure those who report to him do so with every sense of liberty. There must be no-holds-barred on their opinions. As much as decorum is expedient in the delivery of feedbacks, a leader must be secured enough to request for and accept them. Even when they are indicting on the leader’s performance, in so far as they are constructive, honest and with a view to improving outcomes, it should be well received and encouraged. Feedback makes for genuine monitoring and evaluation and no task pulls through and succeeds where this is lacking.

ILLUSTRATION:

From the passage above, Jesus needed feedback on His identity from His disciples having been with them for a while. From the feedback, the ignorance of the disciples about who their leader is was made glaring to them through their guesses. At the same time, the reality of His person was unveiled to them through the mouth of Peter. This event, no doubt, was a faith booster for the disciples in the leadership of our Lord. Feedback will always enhance understanding and teamwork.

REFLECTION:

  1. Do you give room for feedbacks from your followers?
  2. How free are they to air their views and opinion
