GOAL SETTING 6

SCRIPTURE: “Test and evaluate yourselves to see whether you are in the faith and living your lives as [committed] believers. Examine yourselves [not me]! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves [by an ongoing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test and are rejected as counterfeit?” (2Cor. 13:5 AMP).

QUOTE: “Without a plan, even the most brilliant business can get lost. You need to have goals, create milestones and have a strategy in place to set yourself up for success.” -Yogi Berra

NOTE:

A milestone is a stone by the side of a road that shows the distance in miles to a specified place, or an action, or event marking a significant change or stage in development. When driving on most motorways, we observe that there are landmarks and refill stops between cities. In the same way, goals have milestones to check progress and review the need for continuity, speed or pause. Goals define where you’re going, and milestones let you know if you’re actually getting there. Achieving visionary goals requires practical milestones that let you make realistic progress. Imagine that I have a goal to design a Nokia 3310 in 2022 when we already have the iPhone 14 which has a lot of the latest phone features. A milestone review at this point will serve the all-important purpose of helping me understand how pointless a continued pursuit may be. What if I am on the verge of a major medical science breakthrough and during a milestone review there are strong indications that the solution will meet an impending global need? Then I would need to put in extra time and effort to accelerate the work.

ILLUSTRATION:

In Genesis 1:31 God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good and He validated it completely. When God said what He made was good, He was affirming its original design and intent: to reflect and display His good character, power and nature. God reviewed every step of creation and affirmed that it was exactly the sort of quality that He desired- “good!”.

REFLECTION:

  1. When last did you do a milestone review?
  2. What was the outcome?
