TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS 6: FOCUS

SCRIPTURE: “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”  (Philipians 3:13-14.)

QUOTE: “Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” – Alexander Graham Bell

NOTE:

Doing deep work and being focused on the most important tasks of the day are two of the most popular concepts in time management. Avoiding multi-tasking, eliminating all distractions and giving everything to the task at hand is how great things in life are achieved. Focus your efforts and shine at what you are best at in life. The Number one problem that stops people getting what they want is lack of focus. Those that focus on what they want to achieve prosper, while those that don’t struggle. Focusing on the task at hand will help you achieve or get results quicker than if you give in to distractions. Focus saves time and helps you maximize time. Lack of focus is one of the top reasons people fail. You will increase your chances of succeeding when you avoid distractions and chose to be focused

ILLUSTRATION:

A convex lens can concentrate the sun’s rays to a point and burn a hole in a piece of paper. A hole is burnt in the paper because a convex lens converges the parallel beam of light rays, and in this case, it converges or focuses a lot of heat rays coming from the sun to a single point which burns the hole in the paper. Just like the sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus, you can’t achieve much and maximize time until you bring yourself to a focus. Focus helps us maximize time because it shortens the time it takes to get results. Focus is a time saver

REFLECTION:

  1. Would you describe yourself as a focused person? Are you easily distracted?
  2. What behavioral changes or decisions can you make today that will enhance your focus and help you maximize time?
