PREPARE THE FUTURE: REVAMP THE STRUCTURE WITHIN

SCRIPTURE: “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17 ESV)

QUOTE: “Boundaries are basically about providing structure, and structure is essential in building anything that thrives.” -Henry Cloud

NOTE:

Structure determines how far an organization will go. More than 80 percent of CEOs plan to make changes to their organizational structure, as well as their engagement strategy with employees, particularly the younger workers.

Developing a less horizontal organizational structure and evolving it to be more lateral with less bureaucracy should be encouraged so as to provide the environment for complete knowledge transfer. Although this type of change may be difficult for larger organizations, it is ultimately about finding a structure that can accommodate more meaningful input from everyone.

An organizational structure that requires a great idea from an employee to travel up three or four levels of management levels will not suffice. It has to be a structure in which employees can run their idea by trusted management and then share it directly with those at the top without hesitating. Leaders that will take over in the future should get used to the leadership environment.

ILLUSTRATION:

The book Start up nation by Dan Senor and Saul singer highlights this point vividly. It shows how open the leadership style of the Jews is. Juniors are able to access and interact with their superiors freely, their thoughts respected and acted upon. Juniors are given the opportunity to make strategic plans for the country at large. This structure has kept them strong and thriving amongst mighty enemy nations for decades now.

REFLECTION:

  1. What are the structures that need revamping in your organization?
  2. How accessible are leaders in your organization?
