LEADERSHIP PITFALLS: BURNOUT

SCRIPTURE: “And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. (Mark 6:31 KJV)

QUOTE: “Burnout is what happens when you try to avoid being human for too long.” – Michael Gungor.

NOTE:

Leadership at all levels is demanding and every leader wants to be an achiever. Great accomplishment require lots of pressure on self and pushing of boundaries and limits. The inevitable if not checked is negligence of self-care. Leadership burnout is common with high performing leaders. When our idea of duty is that of a workaholic, operating with poor rest routine, work-related stress with health consequences will naturally set in. Researchers looked into how burnout impacts mortality and health costs in the United States and found that it led to nearly 120,000 deaths and about $190 billion in spending each year. This is alarming. The simple solution to burnout is to craft a system that promotes work-life balance and ensure that all within the group or organization is compelled to comply with it.

ILLUSTRATION:

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” (Genesis 2:2 KJV)

REFLECTION:

  1. Are you a workaholic?
  2. Do you glory in hard work without rest?
