TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS 7: AVOID PROCRASTINATION

SCRIPTURE: Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. (Ecclesiastes 11:4)

QUOTE: “Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.” -Napoleon Hill

NOTE:

An unknown author wrote the following poem about the value of time. The poem goes thus, “To realize the value of one year, ask a student who failed a grade. To realize the value of one month, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of one week, ask a writer of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of one day, ask an applicant who missed a job interview. To realize the value of one hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of one minute, ask the person who just missed his plane. To realize the value of one second, ask a person who has survived an accident.

To realize the value of one millisecond, ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics”. Time is valuable and time must be maximized. One way we can maximize the value of time is to avoid procrastination. Procrastination is the action of unnecessarily and voluntarily delaying or postponing something despite knowing that there will be negative consequences for doing so.

In other words, procrastination is the act of unnecessarily postponing decisions or actions. For example, if someone delays working on an assignment until right before its deadline for no reason, even though they know that it would be better for them to start earlier, that person is procrastinating. In order to maximize the value of time, you must avoid procrastination.

ILLUSTRATION:

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that a body at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts on it, and a body in motion at a constant velocity will remain in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force. Nothing changes until you change. Nothing moves until you move. Nothing gets done until you get it done. You must be Intentional about doing what needs to be done. Be Intentional about taking the steps in actualization of your dreams or vision. There is no perfect time to do what needs to be done. You must ensure that waiting for a perfect opportunity is not just an excuse for your procrastination. Until you quit procrastinating and take action, time will slip through your fingers and your dream will not be actualized. Procrastination is a time waster

REFLECTION:

  1. Are you someone who is given to procrastination?
  2. Do you do what needs to be done when it ought to be done?
